Horse racing can be very lucrative, and there is no denying that some jockeys can literally earn millions and millions! But, do you know who is the richest jockey in the world?
OLGB.com published a list of the top 50 earning jockeys in March 2022.
However, you may not have even heard of the world’s top-earning jockeys!
With racing prize money and earnings being much larger on the other side of the world, the majority of the Jockey Rich List is based primarily in Japan which is the home to the largest racing industry in the world. There are also many successful (and wealthy!) jockeys based in the United States.
The earnings comprise the total prize money won on all rides before distribution among stakeholders. Jockeys typically earn around 5% of prize money from their rides, although that number can be as high as 10% in certain circumstances.
Richest Jockey in the UK
No English jockeys are listed in the top 50 with the only familiar name being the UK-based Frankie Dettori (Italy). He has had 3,286 wins (when the list was published) and yet is way down the list at 37th with an estimated fortune of approximately $212m, which is still a mind-boggling amount!!!
English names we all know and recognise (but despite their fortunes being nowhere near the top 50) are Tony McCoy ($54.8m) and Ruby Walsh ($29m).
Highest Paid Jockey in the World in 2022
First place on the list goes to Japan’s Yutaka Take, with an estimated fortune of $796m earned and over 2,500 wins. He may not be a household name here in the UK, but he is a legend in Japan!
