At last week’s council meeting, Mayor Ralph DiGuiseppe III mentioned a rescue situation Bristol Borough first responders were involved in earlier this month.

The first rescue occurred around 9:30 p.m. ,Bristol Consolidated Fire Chief Steve Reeves said, at the Green Lane underpass.

Just prior, we received information that Green Lane at the railroad underpass was flooding. Soon after, Bristol Borough fire companies were dispatched to the area for a vehicle in the water, said Reeves.

A joint crew from American Hose Hook and Ladder #2 and Bristol Consolidated Fire Station # 50 responded and located a car occupied by two individuals in standing water, fire officials said.

Two firefighters entered the water and assisted one occupant out. Since the second occupant had an ambulatory challenge, a third first responder entered the water to assist, Reeves said.

Additional resources from Bristol Fire Company and Croydon Fire Company were requested but, ultimately, not needed. The occupants were evaluated by Bucks County Rescue Squad. Bristol Police Department assisted with traffic control.

DiGuiseppe III identified the three rescuers at last weeks meeting, however the publication is unclear of exact name spelling for each of the first responders that were part of the rescue as publication time. We are hoping to obtain that information over the next 24 hours.

The mayor, during the meeting and after a presentation by Borough engineer Amanda Fuller of Gilmore and Associates, Inc. covering issues surrounding the state road, suggested a temporary fix of electronic arms to stop the flow of traffic going in and out of Bristol.

“I think its imperative we take additional action in terms of stopping the traffic …and consider some manual arms that can be stored on either side of Green Lane on both sides of the rail pass that we can quickly close.”

DiGuiseppe cited the drag on resources and manpower within the borough when flooding is taking place. He also pointed out visitors from outside of Bristol who will be going to the ever growing number of restaurants in the borough are for the most part unaware of what happens on Green Lane during heavy rains.

Officials agreed to look into and what is required by PennDOT as a temporary prophylactic for constant flooding on Green Lane.

Lower Bucks Source will be publishing a story later this week on Fuller’s report to council covering Green Lane and several other related projects the engineering company is spearheading on behalf of Bristol.

Meanwhile Bristol Consolidated Fire officials recommend the following to locals and beyond when there is flooding in the borough:

With the possibility of heavy rain and flash flooding over the next few days please remember the following…

-DO NOT drive through flooded roadways.
-DO NOT drive around barricades or road closed signs.<
-If you live in a low area or near a waterway, monitor the water level in case you need to evacuate.
-Prepare for the possibility of a power outage. Create an emergency kit with items like water, non-perishable foods, portable power supplies, and a first aid kit.
-Use 911 for emergencies only. Report power outages directly to your electric supplier.
-Be alert for updates and changes to the forecast and local emergency management plans as these storm systems can change over the next few days.

-Be Safe!

In 2013 it was a plan and a dream to bring new life back to Bristol Borough, more specifically with the building of the docks along the Delaware River. Now the borough is seeking state and federal funding to further expand and build upon this success.

Monday night, Borough Council voted to approve a resolution to apply for funding through the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Services.

Council President Ralph DiGuiseppe said we want to make improvements to the waterfront by expanding the docks with the grants we are applying for. Adding the funds would permit the left side of the existing docks to be constructed.

The new docks opened in 2015 and is seen as a key element to the now thriving merchant district on and along Mill Street. So much so, for example, the Hops & Hardware Distillery adjacent to Mill Street on Cedar Street, and the Open Center Yoga, on Wood Street were approved for expansion plans of their own last week. Lower Bucks Source will be covering those approved plans in the near future.

President of Bristol’s Raising the Bar Bill Pezza said three good things happened for Bristol, a synergy if you will; Council’s commitment to find ways and means to reinvigorate Mill Street, the grant to build out the waterfront docks, and the Raising the Bar small business revolution.

The real important thing also is Bristol Borough now has a proven track record of success, Pezza said, when winning grants like these. The money is spent on what it’s for, and the results flow in from boaters docking on the waterfront just like we all imagined years ago.

“They’re back” goes the old saying and on this occasion, it might not be a supermarket as so many called for earlier this week, as Total Liquidators moved back into Bristol Borough, it announced Friday.

In the two hours since the post went live on their social media platforms, it has earned over 500 comments already.

The big box retail liquidations sale outlet moved into the same location in the fall of 2020, closing its doors a little more than two years later

According to a post on Meta, the Bristol location will open its doors in late September meanwhile in celebration of the anticipated re-launch, a company spokesperson said, “Total Liquidators is permanently changing our clothing prices at ALL LOCATIONS to be better than any sales we have ever run!”

The sales floor will be bigger and better than ever with a clothing department at least three times the size of the last, was also noted in the post.

Prior to the retail outlet renting the 120,000 square foot warehouse, the Bristol Indoor Flea Market rented the space on a short-term lease. Just as the flea market was kicking into high gear, Coronavirus struck the area leading to businesses shutting down. The flea market pivoted quickly to operating outdoors in the parking lot, however public safety concerns led to its eventual shutdown.

Earlier this year, RideNow rented the space and then crashed months later, closing operations in Bristol.

Family Dollar Store, which opened in late 2020 just doors away, is still open despite significant traffic flow drops into the Bristol Park shopping center.
